WWPCA decided: Varga and Havenga the best coaches in the world 2018

The World Water Polo Coaches Association has chosen The Best Men‘s and Women‘s Coaches in the world for 2018. Zsolt Varga (Ferencvaros’s male team) and Arno Havenga (the female team of The Netherlands), have been chosen for the best coaches by the votes of 17 of world best water polo coaches, that are directors of the WWPCA board.

Zsolt Varga (born in 1978), who won the gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games as a player of the national team of Hungary, has been coaching Ferencvaros since 2013. The Budapest-based team won four trophies in big competitions in 2018.

Ferencavos successfully defended the Euro Cup to become the third club which has managed to win two trophies in this competition in a row (after Brescia in 2002 and 2003, and Savona in 2011 and 2012). Then, it clinched the title in the Hungarian championships for the first time since 2000. In the first half of the 2018/19 season, Varga’s team added two trophies. Ferencvaros won the LEN Super Cup in November. It defeated European champion Olympiacos, after penalty shootout (12:10). The series of achievements was completed a few weeks ago. Ferencvaros clinched the Hungarian National Cup, for the first time since 1997, by beating Miskolc in the final game (10:4).

Arno Havenga

Arno Havenga (born in 1974), led the national team of the Netherlands towards the silver medal at the 2015 World Aquatics Championships and two silver medals at the European championships of 2014 and 2016. The crown of his coaching career so far has been the gold medal at the 2018 European Championships in Barcelona. The Netherlands won gold with seven wins and a draw in a clash with Greece in the group stage (6:6). In the final game, the Dutch faced the Greeks again. The Netherlands posted a 6:4 win. It was the 5th European title in the history of the women’s water polo in the Netherlands. Before European gold, the Dutch took silver in the 2018 FINA World League.

 

The WWPCA, which is Waterpology’s partner, has chosen the best coaches for the 4th time.
