USA men’s water polo team edged Montenegro in front of a sellout crowd in Houston on Saturday in the team’s final friendly match before departing for the Rio Olympics. The Americans got off to a nice start leading 2-0 after the opening period en route to building a 8-5 advantage before the final period. The Montenegrins however got back into the game by scoring four straight goals for the 8-9 lead after centre forward Filip Klikovac netted his only goal of the contest. Montenegro’s first lead of the game however would not stand until the final whistle as the home team showed resillience and turned around in the score in the final minutes to give the crowd something to cheer for concluding their ‘Road to Rio’ as Thomas Dunstan (equaliser) and a Tony Azevedo lob winner decided the outcome in favour of Team USA.
Both sides will meet again at the Olympics both being drawn in group B along with Spain, France, Italy and Croatia. The first four teams of each group advance to the quarterfinals.
