The 18th round of the Italian Championship was highlighted by two thrilling matches that ended with no winners. The clubs from the top of the table had no problems in this round beating their respective rivals with ease.

The match of the day was the encounter between 4th-placed Ortigia and 5th-placed Savona, which was a host in this game. Ortigia led for most of the time. The visiting team was 6:3 up early in the third period and it led 7:4 in the middle of the quarter. Savona climbed back and equalised in the last period (8:8). Ortigia went in front again very soon (9:8). Brazilian Guimares, who came to Savona last summer, netted 87 seconds from time to secure a draw (9:9). Ortigia water polo players could be happier with this outcome because they kept the two-point gap ahead of their chasers, Savona and Canottieri Naples.

Just like Savona, Canottieri saved a point in a thrilling finish. The Naples-based team visited Bogliasco. Deep into the third quarter, the hosts had a three-goal lead  (8:5). Canottieri netted two goals in the last minute of the period and it trailed 7:8 before the final eight minutes. The visitors continued the row of goals to level the score (8:8), but Bogliasco earned a new advantage (9:8) and it almost managed to keep the lead till the end. An experienced ex-Pro Recco player Federico Lapenna decided everything, by converting an extra-man attack with 0:03 on the clock (9:9).

Pro Recco, Sport Management and Brescia didn’t have any mercy. Pro Recco extended its winning streak, defeating Lazio (18:4). Sport Management was more convincing. The 2nd-placed team demolished last-placed Acquachiara (23:5), Brescia did a clean job in Florence, against Florentia (13:3).

Posillipo returned home with three golden points in a runaway from the bottom of the table. The former European champion beat Trieste. Deep into the third period, Posillipo was 5:6 down. The visitors then netted six unanswered goals till the last buzzer to achieve an 11:6 win.

A visiting team collected all three points in Torino, too. Catania water polo players, led by Serb Nenad Kacar (7 goals), defeated Torino 81 (11:7) and achieved the 4th win in a row. Thanks to draws in Savona and Bogliasco, they kept slim chances to reach the Final Six. Catania climbed into the 7th place, with 8 points less than Savona and Canottieri.
