Top three Italian clubs opened 2019 with wins in the 12th round of the national championship. Pro Recco and Brescia convincingly beat their respective rivals. Sport Management had to fight hard to take all three points.

The most thrilling match of the day was played in Naples. Posillipo hosted Sport Management. The visitors opened the game with a 4:1 advantage (11th minute). Posillipo was able to come back and equalized early in the third quarter (5:5). The two teams were tied before the last eight minutes (9:9), too. Sport Management built a 2-goal advantage after a minute and a half of play in the 4th quarter (11:9). Posillipo couldn’t catch the visitors anymore. Sport Management posted a 13:12 win.

Pro Recco had no problems on Sicily. The champion faced Ortigia in a match that was played in the outdoor pool in Syracuse. At halftime, the visitors had a 3-goal lead (5:2). They scored three straight goal in the first 3 minutes of the third period (8:2) and secured the victory (11:5).

The best scorer was Giacoppo, who scored all 5 Ortigia’s goals. On the other side, Francesco di Fulvio found the net 4 times.

Ivovic the best world’s player in 2018 by Swimming world magazine

A day before the match in Syracuse, a nice information came to Pro Recco from the USA. Swimming World Magazine, the prestigious Phoenix-based swimming magazine choose Recco captain Aleksandar Ivovic the best world’s water polo player of 2018. Last year, Ivovic led Montenegro towards gold in the World League. But the Montenegrins didn’t win a medal at the European Championships, while Recco ended the previous season with a loss to Olympiacos in the Champions League final, held in Genoa.

Brescia played badly in defense in its first match in 2019, but the Italian vice-champion, defeated Trieste by a 6-goal margin. After a flood of goals in the opening 11 minutes Brescia had a slim 6:5 lead. The hosts built a 4-goal advantage by the end of the 2nd period (9:5) and controlled the match until the final buzzer for a 16:10 victory.

Savona water polo players were blown by Lazio in their own pool. The home side trailed 3:5 at halftime. Lazio produced a 3:0 rush in the 3rd quarter for 8:3 which proved vital in the visitors’ win (8:4). Lazio played excellent in attacks in which they had an extra player. The Rome-based team converted all of its 6 man-ups.

Bogliasco finally earned its first win this season. It hosted Roma, which led 4:3 in the middle of the second quarter. Bogliasco responded with 5 goals in a row to jump to a 8:4 lead and maintained the advantage until the end (9:5).

Iren Quinto climbed into the 5th place after a win over Catania in Genoa. The home team secured the 3 points by the middle of the last quarter. Iren Quinto built a 10:6 advantage in the 28th minute. Catania reduced the gap, but there was no time for a turn (11:9).

Quinto collected 21 points as well as 4-th placed Florentia, which defeated Canottieri by a goal (10:9). Florentia was 10:7 up two minutes before the end. The Naples-based side netted two late goals, that changed nothing.
