The highlight of the 17th round of the Hungarian championship was a thrilling encounter between title-holder Ferencvaros and Miskolc.

Ferencvaros continued its winning streak, but “Fradi” barely saved all three points. The match, played in Miskolc, offered plenty of twists and turns. Ferencvaros had a 2-goal lead twice in the second quarter (4:2 and 5:3). The hosts, led by American Alexander Bowen (5 goals) caught the rival by the end of the 2nd quarter (5:5), while they went in front in the third period (6:5 and 7:6). Ferencvaros bounced back by scoring five goals in a row.

The reigning champion earned an 11:7 advantage early in the last quarter. But, Miskolc was able to come back and reduce the gap to one (10:11) with 2:10 minutes remaining on the clock. 30 seconds later, Ferencvaros’s Vamos found the net for 12:10, which proved decisive in the visitors’ win. The home side scored its 11th goal when it was too late, 22 seconds before the end. Ferencvaros recorded a narrow 12:11 victory. The best scorer in the winning team was a captain Denes Varga (4 goals).

Ferencvaros remains in a tight race with OSC, which stormed past BVCS. OSC’s defense was outstanding. Early in the third quarter, OSC water polo players were 8:1 up. They didn’t have a hard task to keep the victory in the remaining time. OSC, pulled by a center-back Sava Randjelovic, a member of the Serbian national team, who netted 4 goals, demolished BVSC – 12:3.

Szolnok didn’t leave a decision too late, as well as OSC. Szolnok hosted Honved. An opening 5:0 rush put the home team on the right track. Szolnok entered the second half of the match with a 6-goal lead (8:2). The third period was balanced (2:2), but the 2017 European champions demolished Honved in the last eight minutes and increased the margin of their win to 11 (17:6). Kristof Szatamary netted 4 goals for Szolnok. He was followed by Serbs Andrija Prlainovic and Viktor Rasovic (3 goals each).

The elder of Rasovic brothers, Strahinja was one of the best players in Eger’s win over Debrecen (14:9). He scored three goals, while the best scorer was Greek Angelos Vlachopoulos (4). Eger water polo players built an 8:4 advantage by halftime. They slowed down in the third and the fourth period, but their win was never in danger.

In the group for places 9 – 16, Vasas defeated group-leader PVSK Pecs. The match was played in Budapest. The visitors from Pecs had a 4:3 lead in the middle of the second period. In the remaining 20 minutes, they could score just one goal, while they conceded six. Vasas recorded a 4-goal win (9:5). Tatabanya defeated AVUS (10:8), Szentes beat Kaposvar (13:8), while UVSE was better than KSI (13:8)
