Favorites didn’t make mistakes in the 8th round of the Regional League. Mladost, Jug, and Jadran Herceg Novi recorded convincing wins, while there were a lot of thrills in the derbies in Sabac and Split.

The Serbian derby was the most exciting match of the day. The encounter between Sabac and Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) offered a lot of twists and turns. Sabac, the host in this game, led 3:2 early in the second period. But, at halftime, Red Star was ahead (4:3). The visitors doubled their advantage in the third quarter. Before the final period, the Belgrade-based side had an 8:6 lead. Sabac managed to equalize (8:8) in the 29th minute. Veljko Tankosic decided the outcome. The young Red Star’s player hit the back of the net with 41 seconds to go for the final score. Red Star won 9:8.

Aleksandar Filipovic replaced Dejan Savic

Red Star was led by a new coach Aleksandar Filipovic, who replaced Dejan Savic. After a series of defeats, Dejan Savic quit a job in Red Star. The club management decided to give a chance to Filipovic, who was Savic’s assistant.

Savic, who was voted for the best coach of the year, by the World Water Polo Coaches Association, left Red Star two days ago. He said that he took responsibility for bad results. Savic was Red Star’s coach from 2011 to 2015. In the season 2012/13, the club had a very strong squad which won the Champions League. Savic returned to Red Star 18 months ago. The club didn’t have a mighty squad in that moment, as well as in this season, but Savic accepted a big challenge. He didn’t reach his own goals and left the club. Savic will remain the head coach of the national team of Serbia.

An encounter between two Split-based clubs, Jadran and Mornar, saw a big battle, but a favorite collected all three points. Jadran led throughout the match, but Mornar was able to stay close for three periods. Before the last eight minutes, Jadran led 4:3. By the middle of the fourth, it built a 3-goal advantage (6:3). Mornar managed to come close once more (5:6) with 1:57 remaining on the clock. In the last minute Jadran grabbed a 7:5 lead, Mornar answered when it was too late, 22 seconds before the end (7:6).

Jadran Herceg Novi hosted Partizan. In the middle of the 1st period, the score was 2:2. Than Jadran staged a 4:0 rush and the hosts were 6:2 up in the 13th minute. The Montenegrins maintained a solid advantage until the last buzzer for a 10:6 win.

Mladost continued its winning streak. The league leader floored last-placed POSK – 19:3.

Title holder Jug also didn’t have a very hard task. The Regional and Croatian champion hosted Primorac. The visitors from Kotor had a slim 2:1 lead in the last minute of the 1st quarter. Jug produced a 6:1 rush and jumped to a 7:3 lead 103 seconds before the end of the second quarter. At halftime, the hosts led 8:4. Jug dominated the third and the fourth quarter and extended the margin of its win to 10 (17:7). A young Russian Danil Merkulov was unstoppable. He scored 6 goals for Jug.

The next round in the Regional league will be played on January 12th.
