It is the new year, but results are still the same. Favourites continue to dominate in Hungarian water polo championship which has continued after a month of a brake.

Szolnok, Ferencvaros and, Eger started the second part of the title contest with big and convincing wins, while last-placed Szeged continued its agony.

After a defeat against Spandau in November last year in the Champions League, Szolnok water polo player started yet another winning streak which was continued in Debrecen. The defending Hungarian and European champion won 16:7 and it was Szolnok fifth win in a row.

Debrecen resisted the favorite in the first quarter, but after that, the visiting team took control and slowly started to walk towards the victory.

After the first half, Szolnok had a four goals lead (9:5) and when the game continued the visitor’s defense was the element of the game which made the final difference. Gergo Zalanki lead the scoring with four goals, while Aron Younger and Milos Cuk followed with three apiece.

Ferencvaros continued to chase Szolnoki and did it with a convincing 20:3 win at UVSE. Truth be told, it was the expected result because UVSE is the weakest team in the Group A. On the other hand, Ferecvaros recorded a fifth straight win in all competitions.

Denes Varga, Toni Nemet, and Norbert Madaras all scored three goals, while Ferencvaros managed to keep a clean sheet in second and fourth quarters.

Eger water polo club maintained a perfect record in the B group after an away win against PVSK – 12:5. It was not until the third quarter that Eger “broke” the rival.

At the start of that period, Balazs Harai and Angelos Vlachopoulos scored two quick goals to give Eger a 9:3 lead. Everything after that was just a matter of routine and Harai, Strahinja Rasovic, Vlachopoulos and Norbert Hosnyanszky all scored two goals.

The biggest win of this round was recorded by Honved water polo club which trashed Szeged at their swimming pool – 20:3. It was all over already after the first quarter in which Honved took a 6:0 lead.

This was Szeged 10th consecutive defeat and once again Martin Szivos was the best player in Budapest team with five goals.
