Steaua clinches 3rd Romanian cup in a row (VIDEO)

Steaua Bucharest continued its domination in Romanian water polo. Last weekend, Steaua clinched its 3rd national cup in a row. This was the 11th trophy for Steaua in the competition.

The Final Eight of the Romanian Cup was played in Steaua’s pool in Bucharest.

The hosts cruised to a win over CSM Tirgu Mures in the quarterfinals (14:2). In the Bucharest derby in the semifinals, Steaua defeated Dinamo (14:10).

As expected, the final game saw an encounter between Steaua and CSM Oradea, the 2017 Euro Cup finalist. Oradea beat Politehnica in the quarterfinals (14:2) and Corona Sportul Studentesc (11:7) in the semifinals.

The rivals were in the neck-and-neck race in the first quarter (3:2) of the final game. Steaua water polo players produced a 3:0 rush in the second period for a 6:2 lead at halftime and they never looked back. Steaua secured a trophy with a 12:6 win. The top scorer was a Croat Jerko Marinic Kragic with 3 goals. Dmitri Goanta, a Greek Marios Kapotsis, and a Russian Nikita Dereviankin netted two goals each, as well as Oradea’s Brazilian Gustavo Guimares “Gummy” and a Japanese Yusuke Inaba.

The third place was taken by Corona Sportul Studentesc. Led by a veteran from Montenegro Blagoje Ivovic, whose brother Aleksandar is Pro Recco’s captain, and Vlad Georgescu, who scored three goals each, Corona defeated Dinamo 15:9 in the game for bronze.
