Steaua Bucharest claims 9th Romanian cup

Steaua won the Cup of Romania, for the ninth time in the history of the water polo club from Bucharest.

The final tournament of the 2017 Romanian cup was held in Bucharest, at the “Steaua Sports Pool”. Six clubs took part. In the final game, the reigning national champions beat CSM Oradea, their biggest rival in Romania, which won the trophy in 2016 Cup.

Steaua achieved four very convincing victories at the final tournament. In the group phase of the Final Six, the home team defeated Rapid from Bucharest (27-1) and Corona (15-4). In the semifinals, Steaua was better than its another local rival from Bucharest, Dinamo (11-5).

In the final, Steaua controlled the match from the first minute till the end. In the middle of the second period, the hosts led 5-1. Oradea came close in the third quarter (5-3 and 6-4). In the last period, Steaua scored four goals in a row and blew away the rival. The home team jumped to a 10-4 lead. Tiberiu Negrean netted a goal for the final result 10-5, a minute and 17 seconds before the end.

The best scorer of the final was Adria Delgado. The Spaniard scored five goals, as well as all Oradea’s players together.

Oradea will have a chance for revenge very soon. The finals of Romanian play-off will see new encounters between Oradea and Steaua.
