Stanford wins in MPSF opener

An encounter between No. 1 USC and No. 3 Stanford opened this season’s MPSF (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) men’s water polo play.

Home team Stanford recorded a 13:11 victory and improved to 9-0 on the year, while USC suffered the first loss after 17 consecutive wins.

Stanford was 8:6 up at halftime. In the third quarter, the hosts jumped to a five-goal lead (12:7) with 3:03 remaining on the clock. USC team, led by freshman Hannes Daube (six goals in the match), netted four goals in a row and it trailed 11:12 with less than two minutes to go. But, the Cardinal didn’t let USC go further. Stanford’s Abramson found the back of the cage  31 seconds from time for a 13:11 victory.

Hannes Daube was the top scorer with 6 goals. Ben Hallock netted 4 goals for Stanford.

After the loss in the MPSF Opener, USC hosted No. 16 San Jose State and demolished the rival 16:5. Eleven Trojans managed to find the net in this clash.

Reigning NCAA champion UCLA Bruins played one game last week. UCLA also hosted San José State. The Bruins continued their unbeaten run (16-0) with a 11:8 victory.

NCAA Water Polo returned to Texas

Six teams compete in the MPSF league this season because Austin College joined the league

Located in Sherman (Texas), the NCAA Division III Men’s Water Polo program from Austin College entered the MPSF from transitioning from club to NCAA Varsity status following the 2017 season. Austin College became the first NCAA Division III school in Texas to offer water polo and the first at any level in the state since Texas A&M in 1976.

Austin Kangaroo men‘s water polo team has played six games this season, but the newcomer still hasn‘t achieved a win.
