Showdowns in Eger, Brescia: Champions League round two

Some real showdowns can be expected in both Eger and Brescia in round 2 of the water polo Champions League, to be played from October 14 through 16, as Monday’s results showed. In Eger the home side will meet the improved squad of BPM Sport Management who is ready to join the absolute top in Italy, while CN Marseille and Mornar can be regarded as real outsiders. Meanwhile in Brescia Italy’s number two AN Brescia, also strengthened by some nice transfers this summer, will square off against Hungary’s OSC, likely to be the clash of the favourites, but with Sintez Kazan also in the group, both sides will have to look out for the Russian opposition. Red Star Belgrade will have a daunting task of making life hard of the three other teams.

In Herceg Novi, host team Jadran headlines an interesting group where Germany’s Waspo 98 Hannover, just 2nd to OSC after a 12-11 defeat in round 1 this weekend, will play for the group win meeting fellow Germans ASC Duisburg and young Greek side Vouliagmeni, led by captain Christos Afroudakis. Finally, in group H, in Rijeka, Primorje, who saw multiple players leaving this summer, but also held on to some strongholds, including centre forward Cosmin Radu, take on Spain’s CN Sabadell, Romania’s round 1 group winner CSM Digi Oradea, and fellow Romanians Steaua Bucharest, the latter two going for a heated match-up that could be considered an advanced Romania water polo play-off finals meeting.
