Water polo tournament at the 17th Mediterranean Games in Tarragona (Spain) is near to the end.

The final match of the men’s competition will see an encounter between Serbia and Greece

Eight teams, split into two groups, take part in the men’s tournament. Group winners advanced to the final game.

Serbia won the 1st place in Group B, ahead of Montenegro, France and Portugal. The crucial match in this group was the game played on Day 1. The Serbs achieved a 6:5 win over Montenegro. A winner was scored by Filip Filipovic, a captain of Serbia, 27 seconds before the end. Serbia and Montenegro had no problems in other matches against Portugal and France.

The competition in Group A saw a dramatic race for the 1st place. Turkey was the only underdog in this group. Other three teams (Italy, Greece, Spain) ended a competition with two wins each. Italy beat Greece (11:10), the Greeks were better than the Spaniards (4:3), while Spain defeated Italy (7:6). The Greeks took the first place, because their clash with Italy ended in a draw after 32 minutes (7:7). They lost to the “Settebello” after penalty-shootout. A point, which Greece earned in that match, decided the rankings.

Serbia was the gold medal winner at the 2009 Mediterranean Games. The Greeks have never won the gold in this competition. Croatia, which took the 1st place at the previous MG (Mersin, Turkey, 2013), didn’t compete in Tarragona.

Spain and Montenegro will play in the match for bronze.

For the first time, women’s water polo tournament is in the schedule of the Mediterranean Games. Six teams compete. Spain and Italy qualified for the final.
