Pro Recco wins first Monaco Trophée des Champions

The first edition of the striking Trophée des Champions in Monte Carlo, Monaco featured the Champions League contenders Jug (reigning champion), Pro Recco, Olympiacos (runner-up) and Germany’s Spandau last weekend. The European powerhouses had a chance of playing a highly competitive preparation tournament for the challenges ahead this season, mainly in the Champions League. Pro Recco came out as winners, despite just holding off Spandau 12-11 in round 2 of the three matches played on Saturday and Sunday. Here Pietro Figlioli’s 5 goals and Dusan Mandic’ 4 powered Recco past the tough German side where Mehdi Marzouki led the charge netting 3 shots. Recco powered through by beating Olympiacos 12-6 and finally Jug 10-6 to win the tournament.

Jug meanwhile finished 2nd after topping Olympiacos in a head-to-head meeting for the runners-up title, 16-14 behind 5 goals from Paulo Obradovic. Ioannis Fountoulis scored 5 for Olympiacos, backed by Albert Español who hit 4.
