OSC and Ferencvaros make no mistake, Debrecen upsets Szolnok

The first part of the Hungarian championship was completed this weekend. After the 14th round, the clubs will be split into two new groups. Ferencvaros, Eger, BVSC, Honved, OSC, Szolnok, Miskolc, and DVSE Debrecen will play in the play-off group (1 – 8 places). The group for the places 9 – 16 is composed by following clubs: PVSK, Szentes, AVUS, KSI, Tatabanya, UVSE, Vasas, and Kaposvar. The last round offered more or less expected outcomes. The big surprise was produced by Debrecen which upset Szolnok.

Group A

Ferencvaros finished the competition in Group A by collecting all 42 points. In the derby of the last round, the title-holder defeated Eger (9:5). Eger, the home team, had a better start, as it gained a 3:1 lead in the 5th minute. Ferencvaros responded with four goals in a row and gained a 5:3 advantage early in the third quarter. Eger was climbing back from time to time, but it wasn‘t able to equalize. In the 28th minute, Eger came close for the last time (5:6). The visitors scored three unanswered goals until the end for a 4-goal victory (9:5).

Besides Ferencvaros and Eger, BVSC and Honved have qualified for the play-off group. These two teams faced each other in the 14th round. The Budapest-based rivals were in the neck-and-neck race, which was ended with no winner – 7:7. The draw was enough for BVSC to keep the 3rd place, while Honved finished as the 4th-placed team, with a point more than 5th-placed PVSK. In the last round, PVSK easily defeated KSI – 13:6. Szentes and AVUS shared points 5:5.

Group B

The surprise of the day happened in Debrecen where home team beat 2017 European champion Szolnok. The hosts shocked Szolnok in the first two quarters. Debrecen had a 7:1 lead at halftime. The home side added one goal early in the third for 8:1. Szolnok, boosted by Andrija Prlainovic (4 goals in the match) started climbing back and managed to reduce the gap to 2 (7:9) with 4:51 minutes remaining on the clock. Debrecen water polo players soon went 10:7 up and controlled the match until the end. They celebrated a 2-goal victory. (10:8). Prlainovic was the best scorer of the match, while the heroes of Debrecen’s win were a goalkeeper Soma Kosik (21 saves), Gergo Fekete (3 goals) and Zoltan Dory Farkas (3 goals).

Debrecen confirmed the 4th place, Szolnok ended the competition in Group B in the 2nd place.

The group-leader OSC continued its winning streak and remained a perfect record – 14/14. In the 14th round, OSC recorded an away victory over 3rd-placed Miskolc. The visitors from Budapest needed just 7 minutes to built a 6:0 lead. Miskloc recovered from the opening shock and it came to 6:8 deep into the second quarter. But, the visiting side answered with 4 straight goals by the end of the third period. OSC entered the last eight minutes with a 12:6 lead. Miskloc kept OSC scoreless in the fourth quarter, but it was too late. OSC celebrated a 12:9 win.
