The first leg of the semifinals of the Euro Cup offered two very interesting games. The winner of the day was Marseille (France) which took a big step forward, by beating Ortigia (Italy) by 3 goals. In the clash of OSC (Hungary) and Jadran (Montenegro) everything is still open before the 2nd leg.
An encounter between Jadran Herceg Novi and OSC Budapest, the teams that played in the Champions League in the past few seasons, was an exciting water polo show, with a lot of twists and turns. OSC, the visiting side, opened the game with a 3:0 rush. Jadran started climbing back in the 2nd period. The hosts equalized in the 14th minute (5:5). They went in front (6:5) 27 seconds from the end of the first half, but at middle break the sides were tied (6:6). The Hungarians took a 7:6 lead early in the third quarter. The Montenegrins responded with three goals in a row to earn their first two-goal advantage (9:7). They the last minute with a 11:9 lead. However OSC’s Salamon found the net 25 seconds from time for the final score 11:10.
Marseille and Ortigia are seeking a historic success. Both teams have never played in the final of the European competition. The Italians controlled the match in the opening minutes. They led 3:1, but after that Marsielle, the host in today’s game, shut out the rival for 13 minutes. The French produced a 4:0 series for a 5:3 lead early in the third period. Ortigia came close to 4:5, but the visitors couldn’t go further. Marseille extended the margin of their win to three (7:4), which put them in a fine position before the return leg, that will be played on Sicily. The man of the match was a Montenegrin Bogdan Djurdjic, who was unstoppable for the Ortigia players. Djurdjic netted 6 goals for Marseille!
