Last-minute dramas in Naples and in Trieste (VIDEO)

Favourites beat their respective rivals with ease in the 2nd round of the Italian water polo championship (Serie A), while thrilling matches were seen in Naples and in Trieste.

Naples derby ended in a draw. Posillipo and Canottieri shared the points in a dramatic encounter. Canottieri led after the first quarter (2:0), but Posillipo managed to equalise till the half-time (2:2) and earned a 2-goal lead in the third period (5:3). In the finish of the third, Canottieri started its series of three consecutive goals and it went in front with 1:42 before the end (6:5). Chancellor Ramirez, a UCLA graduate and a member of the USA team, levelled the score (0:40 on the clock), securing a 6:6 draw.

There were a lot of excitements and turns in the encounter between Trieste and Catania, too. The match was played in Trieste. The visiting team led 4:3 in the 2nd period, but Trieste scored three unanswered goals for 6:4 (19th minute). The hosts, led by Petronio (4 goals) had a 3- goal advantage two minutes before the last break (8:5). Catania responded with four goals in a row and turned a big deficit into a slim advantage (9:8).The drama wasn’t over yet. The decision came 2.22 minutes before the final buzzer when 18-year-old Michelle Mezzaroba netted his 2nd goal to set the final score 9:9. Catania water polo players had two chances in the last minute, but Trieste was able to keep the draw.

Pro Recco water polo players continued a series of convincing wins. They beat the Torino 81 13:2.

Pro Recco wasn’t a team that achieved the most convincing victory in the 2nd round. Bogliasco demolished Acquachiara 17:6. Almost every water polo player of Bogliasco team managed to score. Ten of them hit the target.

Sport Managment defeated Florentia in Firenze. The rivals fought a hard battle in the first half. Sport Management, that was a favourite, was a step ahead of Florentia at half-time (4:3). The visiting team dominated the third period. Before the fourth quarter, the team from Verona went four steps ahead of Florentia – 7:3. Eleven goals were scored in the last period, more than in the three quarters before. But, Florentia didn’t come back. Sport Management won 13:8, after 6:5 fourth period.

Brescia water polo players trailed 1:2 after the first quarter of the match against Ortigia, but they didn’t let another surprise (after a 6:8 defeat in Hannover in the Champions League). From the second period till the end, they controlled the match and won 12:5.

Savona defeated Lazio with ease – 15:8. Savona was led by Gustavo De Freitas Guimaraes. The Brazilian scored four goals. “Grummy”, a member of the national team of Brazil, came from Trieste this summer. He was the 6th best scorer in the Serie A last season (66 goals).
