The 2nd leg of the Women’s LEN Euro League quarterfinals saw big thrillers, last-gasp goals, twists and turns… Title-holder Kinef Kirishi (Russia), UVSE (Hungary), Orizzonte (Italy) and Sabadell (Spain) advanced to the Euro League Final Four. Only Sabadell beat its rival with ease in both games, other games offered a lot of excitements.

Kinef Kirishi travelled to Athens to face Olympiacos, that did a solid job in the first leg. The match in Kirishi ended in a draw (10:10). The Greeks had a chance to take a revenge for the loss against Kirishi in the 2017 Euro League final. But, the Russians took the control from the beginning of the game and they led 5:3 in the 22nd minute. The Greeks responded with four goals in a row for a 7:5 lead in the middle of the second quarter. The visiting team equalised (7:7) by the end of this period.

The fourth quarter was the culmination of the big drama. Olympiacos was 8:7 and 9:8 up early in the period, while Kinef scored next two goals for a 10:9 lead. Alexandra Asimaki levelled the score in the last minute (10:10). It seemed that a penalty shootout would decide the winner. But, everything was ended nine seconds from time. Ekaterina Prokofyeva netted from an extra to set the final score 11:10. Kinef went through, while Olympiacos will miss the Final Four for the first time since 2014.

There was no a penalty shootout in Greece, but penalties determined a winner in Italy, where Orizzonte hosted Dunajvaros.

The Italians beat Dunajvaros in the first match (13:10), but they lost the nice advantage from Hungary in the third quarter of the match in their own pool. At halftime, the visiting side led 6:5, and went 11:6 up by the end of the third period. Orizzonte started climbing back step-by-step. Before the last Orizzonte’s attack the Hungarians still had a ticket for the Final Four, they led 13:9. Two players of the visiting team were excluded in the last 20 seconds, Catharina van der Sloot converted a 6 on 4 with 0:08 remaining on the clock to repeat the result of the 1st leg.

In a long penalty series, eight-time winner Orizzonte scored six goals and missed twice, while the visitors were unsuccessful three times. Orizzonte reached the Final Four, losing the game 16:18 (6:5 penalty shootout).

Everything was pretty open in the other Italian-Hungarian encounter. The match UVSE – Plebiscito Padova in the 1st leg, played in Budapest, ended with no winner (7:7). The Hungarians led throughout the match in Padova. By halftime, they built a 6:2 lead. The home team came close in the middle of the fourth (5:7), but UVSE water polo players kept the lead (6:8 at the end).

Sabadell enjoyed an easy cruise in both games of the all-Spaniard battle. Two weeks ago, Sabadell very convincingly beat Mataro (12:3), while it achieved an 11:6 win in Mataro.

The four losing teams will play for the LEN Trophy. The draws for F4 tournaments of both competitions will be held on 24 March
