Water Polo Federation of Russia voted for the resignation of head coach Vladimir Karabutov at a meeting held at the building of Russian Olympic Committee. The resignation was motivated by personal reasons.
Coach Dmitri Stratan announced that he will also be leaving the team, explaining that he came to the team together with Karabutov.
Vladimir Karabutov had already been the head coach of Russia during 2010-2013. In February 2017, he succeeded Erkin Shagayev.
Since then, Russia men’s national water polo team only played one game with Karabutov at the helm and secured an important victory over Georgia in the World League match.

Sergey Evstigneev will be the acting head coach until the new one is appointed. Evstigneev was a member of the coaching staff at the time when Shagayev was the head coach. Russian water polo players will on March 14 play their next match against Italy in Palermo.
