Jug dominates in big derby in Regional League Day 1

A big derby between last season’s finalists highlighted the first round of the 10th Regional league. Title-holder Jug hosted Jadran, last season’s runner-up, in Dubrovnik today. The Croats opened their campaign in the new season with a convincing win.

Jug controlled the match from the beginning. The Croats led 4:1 in the second quarter, but in the middle of the third period, Jadran managed to reduce the gap to one (4:3). After that, the hosts played excellent in front of their goal. Their defence didn’t let a single goal in the last 11:21 minutes. On the other side of the pool, Jug, led by Maro Jokovic and an addition from Posillipo Vincenzo Renzuto (who each scored 3 goals), netted five unanswered goals for a nice win – 9:3.

Partizan defeated Primorac in Kotor. It was a neck-to-neck battle till the last six minutes. Partizan water polo players led for most of the time, but they had just one two-goals advantage (4:2 in the second quarter). The hosts managed to equalise for the last time in their first attack in the last period (7:7). Serbian champion scored three goals in a row in the last 6:14 minutes and celebrated a 10:7 win. The best scorer of the match was Marko Jankovic (Partizan) who scored four goals.

Mladost didn’t let surprise in its pool. The team from Zagreb defeated Budva 13:7. The hosts secured all three points in the first half. They led 8:3 after the second period. Mladost successfully finished the work in the second half.

Jadran beat Mornar in the Split derby. It was an equal battle till the middle of the second quarter. From the 13th to the 19th minute, Jadran scored five goals in a row and jumped from 2:2 to a 7:2 lead. Mornar couldn’t come back after bad six minutes. Jadran controlled the match till the end and won 13:8.

Another club from Split, POSK took a flying start in the match against Primorje in Rijeka. The guests led 4:0 in the 7th minute. It was a crucial period for an outcome. After the third period, the guests led 8:4. Primorje woke up in the fourth period, but it was too late. POSK kept the lead and beat the hosts, three-times Regional League winners (2013, 2014 and 2015), – 13:8.

Serbian clubs were successful in A 2 group. Red Star, Valjevo, Vojvodina and Sabac achieved victories.
