Jadran Herceg Novi (Montenegro) and Marseille (France) will face off in the 2019 LEN Euro Cup final. Neither of two clubs has won a European trophy, so both teams are eyeing the historic success.
Jadran and Marseille defeated their respective rivals in both semifinal legs.
This evening, in the 2nd semifinal leg Jadran Herceg Novi faced OSC in Budapest. The Montenegrins came in Budapest with a one-goal advantage that they earned in the first match (11:10). OSC erased its deficit quickly. The Hungarians led 3:2 after the first quarter, while they jumped to an 8:3 advantage early in the third quarter. Jadran netted four goals in a row in a span of 2:44 minutes to return into the game (8:7). OSC entered the last quarter with a 10:8 lead. But Jadran had the last laugh. The visitors produced a 4:0 run to build a 12:10 advantage with 2:45 minutes remaining on the clock. OSC couldn’t recover from the new shock. Jadran celebrated another slim, but a historic win – 13:12.
Marseille water polo players took a big step towards the final by defeating Ortigia 7:4 in the first game, played In France four weeks ago. Today, Ortigia suffered a bigger knockout.
Ortigia didn’t disappoint their fans in the opening minutes of this evening’s second match, played in Catania. The Italians had a 3:1 lead in the second quarter. But, after that, the visitors tightened their defense and dominated until the end. Marseille kept Ortigia scoreless in the second half of the match and achieved a great 6-goal victory (10:4).
Marseille became the first French club which reached the final of the European club’s competition. The upcoming matches with Marseille won’t be Jadran’s first European final, as the team from Herceg Novi was the runner-up in the 2003/04 Champions League, behind Honved.
