Jadran Herceg Novi holds of Mladost, thriller in Split

The Regional League 16th round saw very thrilling matches, a lot of twists and turns, while the hunt for the 4th place isn’t over yet. After a victory in this round, Jadran Split is close to the 4th place, but Jadran’s local rival Mornar and Partizan keep alive their hopes of qualifying for the Final Four.

Mladost Zagreb stunned Jadran Herceg Novi in opening minutes of the match of the day. Mladost, the visiting team in the derby of the 16th round, was 3:0 up in the middle of the first period. Jadran recovered from the shock and responded with four goals in a row for a 4:3 lead early in the second quarter. At halftime, it was 7:7.

The third quarter determined an outcome. Jadran scored three unanswered goals in this period, it added one more in the 26th minute and went 11:7 up. The Montenegrins maintained the gap till the end (13:9). Jadran climbed into the 2nd place in the table, with a point ahead of Mladost.

The encounter between Mornar and Partizan, played in Split, ended in a draw. Mornar excellently opened the match and rushed to a 4:0 lead by the end of the first period. Partizan managed to come back, but Mornar again built  a 3-goal lead in the finish of the third period (6:3 in the 22th minute). The side from Belgrade scored three straight goals and finally equalized early in the last quarter (6:6). Mornar again went in front (7:6). 106 seconds before the end Djordje Lazic hit the back of the net for the third time this evening to secure a draw (7:7).

Both teams couldn’t be too happy with a draw, because their rival in a three-horse race for the 4th place Jadran Split achieved a victory this evening

Jadran Split defeated POSK in the first match staged in the Poljud pool in Split today.  Both teams had a lot of ups and downs in this match. POSK water polo players were 0:4 down in the 5th minute. They woke up and produced a 7:1 rush to earn a 2-goal advantage (7:5) at halftime. After the big break, Jadran dominated. It kept POSK scoreless for almost 15 minutes. In the middle of the fourth quarter Jadran was 11:7 up and secured the important three points (11:9).

Jadran Split now holds the 4th place with 21 points. Mornar and Partizan have 20 points both. In next round Mornar will face Jadran (Herceg Novi), Partizan will host Jug. Jadran Split will clash with Budva, which plays better and better in a battle to avoid relegation. The last round will see match Jadran – Partizan in Split. Mornar will play against Jug in
Dubrovnik.

Primorac Kotor earned golden three points, beating Primorje. The Kotor-based water polo players ran way from the bottom of the table to the “safe zone” and avoided relegation. Before the fourth period visiting team Primorje led 9:7. Until the middle of the fourth, Primorac turned around the deficit to a 10:9 lead. Two minutes before the final buzzer the rivals were on the same starting point (11:11). Primorac scored twice in the remaining period and won 13:11.

Jug water polo players rolled past Budva, despite they didn’t play so well in the first half of the game (4:2). The defending champion recorded a 14:6 win.
