Jadran water polo club continues the domination in Montenegro national championship. The club from Herceg Novi defended the title after beating visiting Budva 11:4 (3:1, 2:1, 3:2, 3:0) in the third match of the final series.
It was another sweep for the most powerful force in the Montenegrin water polo and also it was eight championship title since the country regained independence in 2006.
In the first match, also at home, Jadran won 11:7, while it was even easier in the second game in Budva – 14:7. Also, this was a season where Jadran once again one the double, because the club previously took the trophy in the national cup competition.
The team which is led by former world champion Vladimir Gojkovic played great defense, mainly based on pressing the rival in the early phase of their attack. In all three matches that, with of course better roster, gave Jadran the advantage over Budva.
DANIL MERKULOV WAS UNSTOPPABLE
Merkulov was the best scorer with four goals for Jadran, while Radovic and Gardasevic added two each. Spaic, Draskovic, and Petkovic all scored one goal apiece. Budva had a lot of trouble with the offense in all three games, and in the last duel, Maksimovic scored twice.
This was a 47th consecutive win for Jadran against rivals from Montenegro and last time they were defeated in February 2014.
In the first quarter Djuro Radovic, Mark Petkovic and Filip Gardasevic found the net so Jadran got a 3:1 lead. Danil Merkulov opened the scoring sheet in the second quarter. The same player found the net once more in this period of the game.
When Merkulov scored a brace of goals at the start of the third quarter and Jadran got to a 7:2 lead, it was clear that the final series is going to end in this match.
Jadran now has one more game to play before the end of the season – against Spandau in Berlin in the last round of LEN Champions League.
