The quarterfinals of the 2016 FINA Men’s World Youth Championships are set. In the play-off matches for qualification on Thursday Russia, Hungary, Croatia and Italy joined the group winners. For Russia it meant knocking off USA 15-8 in a little unexpected clear victory. Especially the second half of the contest saw the Russians in control on their way to now facing hosts Montenegro on Friday night. Hungary overcame the high-scoring Japan side 15-11 while Canada and Croatia scored even more goals, but the Croatians ran away in the second half to a 13-23 victory. The big clash between Italy and Spain was a close one as expected. The Italians came up 12-10 with 2.42 to play in the game but Spain scored twice to equalise, through hits by Pablo Gomez and Josep Puig. The winner however was made by Mario Guidi for the Italians. On a counter attack he struck with 0.36 on the clock only to see Puig missing the final shot for Spain as Italy held on to advance, now meeting Serbia in the quarterfinals.
