The 2016 Rio Olympics women’s quarterfinals were on display in the Olympic Aquatics Stadium on Monday and saw an upset in the second match where Hungary eliminated London 2012 bronze medallists Australia from medal contention this time. In a thriller the Hungarian women came away with a 11-13 win on penalties.

Match winner for the Hungarians was Dora Antal. Not only did she scored the equaliser (8-8) with 2.59 to play in the final period, she also converted the final penalty shot in the shootout to send her team to the semi-finals while the Aussie Stingers are forced play for 5th place. In the semi-finals Hungary will face reigning champions USA who dominated host nation Brazil 3-13 in their quarterfinal. Holding their opponents scoreless for 3 quarters the American women early on knew that their spot in the semis was guaranteed.

Silver medallists from London 2012 Spain also did not got past the quarterfinals. In an attractive match-up Russia proved offensively stronger and won 12-10. The victory only came in the second half after the first two periods saw a levelled match. Spain came back close though as top scorer Roser Tarrago scored the 10-9 goal with 2.30 remaining but Russia was right there to respond crushing all Spanish hopes by hitting twice (Karimova, Prokofyeva) which sealed the deal. Laura Lopez struck for the 12-10 final score but her goal came to late with under a minute to go.
The Russians will take on Italy in the semi-finals after the Setterosa defeated China 12-7 behind a balanced team performance. The Italian women walked away in the second and third quarter where the game was decided. Goals were exchanged in the final session but China was not able to force a comeback.
