Hungary ends up winning Olympic Qualification Tournament

Hungary emerged as winners of the Olympic Qualification Tournament in Trieste on Sunday beating Italy 10-8. Thanks to strong play in the 2nd and 3rd quarter the Hungarians managed to overcame an early 2-3 deficit and secure their 2-goal victory over the hosts, taking the gold medal. Spain rolled past France 4-16 taking the bronze medal. The Netherlands edged Canada 9-8 finishing 5th while Romania took 7th place holding off Germany 9-10, ahead of the anticipated 2016 Olympic Games draw which took place hours after the last match.

Day 8 – Sunday, April 10 (finals):

Germany (L35) vs. Romania (L36) 9-10 (2-3, 2-2, 1-3, 4-2) – 7th/8th place
Netherlands (W35) vs. Canada (W36) 9-8 (1-2, 2-2, 4-3, 2-1) – 5th/6th place
France (L37) vs. Spain (L38) 4-16 (1-4, 2-5, 0-4, 1-3) – 3rd/4th place
Hungary (W37) vs. Italy (W38) 10-8 (2-3, 4-2, 3-1, 1-2) – 1st/2nd place

After the conclusion of the FINA Men’s Water Polo Olympic Games Qualification Tournament, staged in Trieste (ITA) from April 3-10, 2016 the draws for the men’s and women’s events at the Rio Games were held.

In the men’s competition, 12 teams will compete in Brazil from August 6-20, 2016 and will be distributed in two groups, as follows:


A1 – Serbia
A2 – Greece
A3 – Brazil
A4 – Australia
A5 – Japan
A6 – Hungary

B1 – United States
B2 – Spain
B3 – France
B4 – Montenegro
B5 – Italy
B6 – Croatia

In the women’s field, 8 national squads will be present in Rio from August 9, 19, 2016 and are included in two groups, as follows:


A1 – Italy
A2 – Russia
A3 – Australia
A4 – Brazil

B1 – Spain
B2 – China
B3 – Hungary
B4 – United States
