The 99th Italian water polo championships (Serie A) started with a flood of goals. More than 100 goals were scored in eight matches of the first round -131.

Pro Recco demolished Savona. Title-holder played outstanding in the defence as well as in the attack and won 19:2. Savona managed to score only in the second quarter. On the other side, ten players of Recco made the scoresheet. Recco had a five-goal advantage (7:2) at half-time. In the middle of the third quarter, Savona coach Angelini replaced an experienced goalkeeper Slobodan Soro with Missiroli, but it didn’t help his team. The match was Filip Filipovic’s first game in the Italian championship after five years. Meanwhile, he had played for Radnicki Kragujevac (2012-2014) and after that, he returned to Recco, but he didn’t play in national competitions till the current season.

Sport Management also achieved a convincing victory, despite the team had a lot of problems with injuries this week. Only nine players in the field and one goalkeeper were able to play in the match against Torino 81. The team from Verona blew away the guests (18:8). Sport Managment secured a win in the first half, earning a seven-goal advantage (8:1).

Vice-champion Brescia raced past newcomer Nuoto Catania, as a guest. The hosts started better and led 3:1 in the 6th minute. But, Brescia water polo players didn’t let a surprise and won with ease 14:7. They netted 14 goals, despite their terrible extra-man statistics: 4 of 16!. Ten players of Brescia managed to score, while Kacar from Catania was the best scorer, with 5 goals.

There were a lot of turns in Rome, where Lazio hosted Bogliasco. The guests were 9:7 up in the 3rd quarter, but Lazio managed to equalise before the last break (9:9). The hosts, led by Giacomo Cannella (6 goals), continued their series of goals and went in front in the last period (11:9). They kept the lead and beat Bogliasco 13:12.

A thrilling match was seen in Syracuse (Sicily) too. Host Ortigia led 8:4 after the third period of the match against Posillipo. But, the guests „woke up“ in the last period. Posillipo scored three goals in a row and brought the margin to one (8:7). The players from Naples had a few nice chances in the last few minutes but they didn’t level the score.

Two matches were played in Naples. Canottieri, the oldest water polo club in Naples (founded 1916) defeated Florentia. The hosts earned a solid lead in the first half (4:1) and maintained advantage till the end. Guests collected all three points in the other game in Naples. Trieste, the debutant in the Serie A1, beat Aquachiara thanks to an excellent defensive display – 7:3.
