Regional League

Final Four to be played in Zagreb

Mladost secured 1st place one round before the end of the 2018/19 Regional League. This means that the Zagreb-based side will be the host of the Final Four tournament. Besides Mladost, Jadran Herceg Novi, Jug Dubrovnik, and Jadran Split will play at the F4.

The Final Four will be held in Zagreb in the middle of the April (19th and 20th). Before the start of the season, the F4 was scheduled for the end of this month (March 30 – 31), but the Regional League Board postponed the tournament because Jadran Herceg Novi will play in the Euro Cup final against Marseille (March 30th & April 13th). Pairings for the semifinals at the F4 are Mladost Zagreb (1st place in the league) – Jadran Split (4th) and Jadran Herceg Novi (2nd or 3rd) – Jug Dubrovnik (3rd or 2nd).

Mladost didn’t have a hard task in today’s 17th round. The league-leader enjoyed an easy cruise in Split. It faced bottom-placed POSK. Mladost dominated from the 1st whistle. Deep into the third period, the visitors had a 9:2 lead. In the remaining time, Mladost slowed down and recorded a 15:7 victory. The top scorer was Antonio Petkovic (4 goals).

Jadran Herceg Novi defeated Partizan in Belgrade. The young home team fought bravely. In the middle of the second quarter, the sides were tied – 3:3. Then Jadran took control and jumped to a 6:3 lead early in the third quarter. The home side came close twice (4:6 and 5:7). Jadran built a 6-goal advantage by the middle of the last quarter (11:5) and there was no way back for Partizan. The Serbs managed to reduce the gap with three unanswered goals for the final score 8:11.

Title-holder Jug beat Primorac in Budva (15:9). The 2nd period determined the outcome. After 2:2 (6th minute), Jug shut out the hosts for more than nine minutes. On the other side of the pool, the visitors netted five goals in a row. Jug jumped to a 7:2 lead 2:43 minutes from the end of the 2nd period, which decided everything.

The encounter between two Split-based sides Mornar and Jadran offered a flood of goals, despite both teams started slowly. After the first quarter, it was 1:1. But, the second period saw 12 goals! Jadran scored 9, while it conceded three and earned a 10:4 lead. Mornar couldn’t recover from the shock in the second half. Jadran Split took points with a 20:10 win.

The round was completed by a Serbian derby, played on Sunday. Sabac defeated Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) – 13:10 in Belgrade.

POSK was relegated to the A2 League, while the last round will answer the question who will compete in the playout. Partizan is still in 9th place, with two points behind 8th-placed Primorac. Both teams will play hard away matches in the 18th round. Primorac is going to play against Mladost, while Partizan will face Jadran Split.

Budva was promoted to the A1 League, as it clinched 1st place in the A2 League. Second-placed Solaris advanced to the play-out. Radnicki, which was in the 2nd place before the last round, didn’t manage to defeat Vojvodina today (the match ended in a 7:7 draw) and fell down to the 3rd place.
