Favorites continue a tight race for the first place in Hungarian water polo championship. But, unlike some previous weekends, in the Round 5 of Winners stage, Szolnok had a very easy job, while Ferencvaros had to survive a real drama.

Szolnok was merciless against home team of Honved in Budapest – 16:3. It was obvious after the first quarter that the European champion is going to have an easy job. Szolnok opened the game with four consecutive goals in that period, a then also took a 5:0 lead at the start of the second quarter.

Fulop Bence was especially ready to demonstrate some good water polo performance in the attack. He scored twice in the opening minutes of the game in Budapest. The whole team of Szolnok played outstanding defense during most of the game as Honved scored just one goal until the end of the third quarter.

Ferencvaros was “hanging” against Miskolci water polo club, but eventually showed a character of a true winner. In the dramatic finish of the game, Fradi proved that it has a good reason to believe that it can win some trophies.

Alex Bowen scored an equalizing goal for Miskolci (7:7) a minute and 20 seconds before the end of the match. But then Fradi turner a gear up.

First, it was Marton Vamos who scored, 45 seconds before the final whistle, who gave Ferencvaros an 8:7 lead, then Marton Halek missed a shot for the home team and Denes Varga netted the ninth goal.

When you see the final result of the game between Debrecen and Eger (10:16), you might think that it was a light training for the visiting water polo club. But Eger had some real problems in the first half.

They took an early 4:1 lead after the first five minutes of the game, but Debrecen had a quick answer. Fekete, Vidovic, and Obradovic all found the net and the home water polo team was just one goal behind.

Eger had to wake up in the third quarter, Avramovic and Kovacs twice found the net so the visiting team got a comfortable 12:8 lead. Debrecen never came back from that, so it was a routine for Eger in the last eight minutes.
