Water polo fans  enjoyed two big games in Budapest this evening. Ferencvaros faced Szolnok, while OSC hosted Eger in the 16th round of the Hungarian Championships. The Budapest-based teams posted wins in both derby matches.

The day was highlighted by an encounter between champions in the previous four editions. Ferencvaros, the reigning champion, hosted Szolnok, which won the title in seasons 2015, 2016, and 2017.

This was the first clash of Ferencvaros and Szolnok since the fifth, decisive match of the final series of the playoffs last season when “Fradi” defeated Szolnok by a goal (8:7).

This evening, Szolnok started well. The visitors gained a 2:1 lead deep into the third period. Ferencvaros water polo players, boosted by their fans, turned around a slim deficit to a 5:3 lead at halftime. The hosts’ 4:1 run proved vital in their win, as Szolnok wasn’t able to equalize the score in thesecond half. The third quarter was balanced (3:3), so Ferencvaros entered the last period with a 8:6 lead. In the middle of the fourth quarter Tamas Sedlmayer hit the back of the net for 9:6. Prlainovic responded (9:7). Aaron Younger decided everything, by scoring his 3rd goal this evening with 1:56 remaining on the clock (10:7). Szolnok managed to reduce the gap – Ferencvaros recorded a 10:8 win.

Ferencvaros continued its unbeaten run, as well as OSC. Both teams maintained their perfect records – 16 wins in 16 games.

The match OSC – Eger didn’t offer a big battle, as OSC blew away the visiting side. Early in the second period, OSC water polo players earned their first 4-goal lead (5:1). They soon went at 7:2 up. The Budapest-based side controlled everything in the third and the fourth quarter. OSC, led by Krisztian Manhercz (4 goals) and Gergo Kovacs (3) cruised to a 12:5 victory.

This evening’s third  game played in Budapest didn’t saw big thrills. Fifth-placed Miskolc visited the capital of Hungary to face Honved. The home team grabbed an early 1:0 lead, but Miskolc answered with four goals in a row (4:1) and it kept a 3-goal advantage until the end of the second period (6:3). During the second quarter, Honved came close twice (4:6 and 5:7). Miskloc, led by a young Serb Ognjen Stojanovic (5 goals) didn’t let the hosts go further and extended the margin of its win to 6 (13:7).

Debrecen defeated BVSC thanks to a big comeback in the last period. After the second quarter, Debrecen, the home team, had a slim 4:3 lead. BVSC dominated the third period and it earned a 6:4 advantage before the final eight minutes. Debrecen struck back strongly. The hosts produced a 5:0 rush in the last quarter for a 9:6 win and caught BVSC in points.
The most interesting match in the group for the places 9 – 16, was played in Tatabanya where the home team defeated Szentes (7:5). The group-leader PVSK Pecs had an easy job playing against AVUS (11:6).
