Ferencvaros and Szolnok continued a neck to neck race in the Winners stage of the Hungarian water polo championship. Both teams recorded victories in the Round two of this competition, but Ferencvaros had a tougher job to do.
Fradi won away against Eger 11:10 and made one more huge statement after a triumph against the defending champion Szolnok last week.
The visiting team opened the game with a lot of self-confidence. Vamos and Varga gave Fradi a 2:0 lead and until the end of the first half, the Budapest team controlled the game.
In the third quarter, Eger was the better rival. Avramovic, Hosnyanszky and Strahinja Rasovic created a lot of problems for Ferencvaros. And thanks to them, Eger entered the last quarter with a 9:8 lead.
Ferencvaros showed some great character in the last eight minutes – Vamos equalized, Pohl gave them a lead, while Tomas Sedlmayer sealed the game with an 11. goal minute and a half before the final whistle.
Szolnok didn’t have any problems with visiting OSC Budapest – 11:9. It was all over already after the first half in which the defending champion gained a six goals advantage (9:3).
Zalanki, Prlainovic, and Kis all scored two goals each and it was just a matter of routine in the second half for the home team.
In a little Budapest derby, Honved won a dramatic game against BVSC Zuglo. Honved controlled most of the match and it seemed like it is all over when Manhercz gave them a 10:7 lead five minutes before the final whistle.
But then BVSC answered – Czigany and Varnai scored two consecutive goals and the visiting team was just one down a minute and a half before the end of the game. Fortunately for Honved, their defense was good enough to resist all the attempts from BVSC.
Miskolc water polo club recorded the most convincing win in this round – it was 21:10 at Debrecen. When you score 12 goals in the first half, it is clear you are on a good way to victory.
That was obviously the case with Miskolc. Alex Bowen was a man of the match with six goals, while Viktor Vadovics and Adam Nagy found the net four times each.
