Favourites strike on women’s opening day

The women finally got their Olympic tournament underway on Tuesday at the Maria Lenk Aquatics Centre. The medal favourites made no mistake on opening day and in some cases even left their mark early on in the tournament. Such was the case for perhaps the top two teams present in Rio, reigning champions USA and Australia. The Americans came out firing against Spain in a re-match of the final four years ago in London. Spain was dominated in a 4-11 beating in Rio on Tuesday. Team USA grabbed the lead early on and simply never looked back in a convincing performance. Leading scorers for the winners were Maggie Steffens, Courtney Mathewson and Kiley Neushul who each netted a pair. Australia did the same and scored even more rolling past what used to be considered as serious opposition, Russia, but could do nothing this time: 4-14. In fact Russia was held scoreless in two quarters where the Aussie Stingers walked away to their opening day victory. Ashleigh Southern fired away for 4 goals while Keesja Gofers and Rowie Webster added 3 each.

In the first pair of matches of the day Hungary held off China in the closest encounter. Dora Czigany led the scoring for the Magyars netting 4 shots as they ran away in the third period where the decision was made. Italy also were off to a winning start as Brazil got defeated 9-3 in a solid outing. Roberta Bianconi led all scorers with 3 in the opening day win for the Italians in group A.
