Favourites continue winning, thriller finish in Bogliasco

After victories in the Champions League on Wednesday, Pro Recco and Brescia continued their winning streaks in the Italian Water Polo Championships. Both clubs recorded very convincing victories in the 4th round, as well as Sport Management, that holds the 3rd place in the standings. But, the fourth round saw a few very exciting matches.

Title-holder Pro Recco blew away Florentia in Firenze. Pro Recco controlled the game from the beginning. Florentia fought bravely, in the middle of the second period the hosts trailed 4:6. After that, Recco ruled the field. The visiting team, led by Filip Filipovic (5 goals), scored nine goals in a row for a 15:4 victory.

Brescia hosted former European champion Posillipo. The first half was pretty balanced. Posillipo led 4:2, but Brescia netted three unanswered goals by half-time for 5:4. The hosts continued their series in the second half and jumped to an 8:4 early in the fourth period. The long series of six goals decided the outcome, Brescia won 12:5.

Sport Management, that is very successful in the Euro Cup, achieved the biggest victory of the round. The side from Verona defeated Lazio 19:6. The best scorers were Stefano Luongo and Eduardo Di Somma, who each netted four goals.

The match in Bogliasco was the most thrilling encounter of the round. The home side Bogliasco played against Ortigia from Sicily in the game with  plenty twists and turns. Before the fourth quarter, Ortigia led 8:6. Then, Bogliasco scored three goals in a span of three minutes for a 9:8 lead (2:24 before the last buzzer). But, Ortigia quickly managed to turn around a deficit into a win. Massimo Giacoppo, a former Pro Recco player, hit the target twice in the last minute and a half, so Ortigia took all three points (10:9).

Savona beat Catania in the match that also has a thrilling fourth period. Savona was 7:4 up after the third period. Early in the fourth, Catania reduced the gap to one (7:6). Both sides had their chances in the remaining period. Catania didn’t manage to score, while Steardo (Savona) netted for an 8:6 1.13 minutes from time.

Canottieri beat Trieste water polo players in a flood of goals. Canottieri led 13:7 before the fourth period. Trieste played better in the last eight minutes, but Canottieri, the visiting team, won 14:10.

Torino 81 earned its first points this season beating Acquachiara 10:7. After this encounter, Aqquachiara remains the only club that didn’t earn at least a point.
