Croatia controls Greece, Netherlands tops France in World League openers

The kick-off of the new international season was made this Wednesday with the opening round of the FINA Water Polo World League preliminary stage in Europe. Here, the reigning champions and 2016 Olympic gold medallists Serbia had no trouble overcoming Romania in Kragujevac, 19-8. Strahinja Rasovic led all scorers with 4 goals. Striking results came from Croatia where the home team defeated Greece 11-6. Top scorers for the Croats were Luka Bukic, Sandro Sukno and Xavi Garcia each scoring twice. In the same group, group B, a rejuvenated Dutch squad held off Olympians France 11-10 in the city of Gouda to get off to a good start of their World League campaign.

In group C Russia edged neighbours Georgia in a tight contest, 14-13, to earn their first win and three points, before taking on favourites Italy later on.
