Two clubs from Naples were the winners of the day in the 25th round of the Italian Serie A. Canottieri water polo players achieved an important win and kept alive their chances to reach the 5th position before the Final Six. Posillipo, another former European champion from Naples, secured its place in the 2018/19 Italian Championship, by escaping the “play-out zone”(10-13th place).

The round was opened by an encounter between Canottieri Naples and Catania at the famous “Felice Scandone” pool in Naples.

Canottieri overcame Catania in a great battle. The hosts led throughout the match, but the visiting didn’t give up until the end. A minute before the last buzzer, Canottieri was 9:6 up. Catania scored twice in the last 60 seconds, but it was too late. The hosts celebrated a 9:8 victory.

After the 25th round, Savona is in the 4th place with 45 points. Ortigia and Canottieri have 44 points each. Canottieri will climb into the 4th or the 5th place if it beat Ortigia in Syracuse in the 26th round when Savona will play against Sport Management

It doesn’t matter which club will be the 4th and which will take the 5th place, because these two teams will face in the quarterfinals of the Final Six (Syracuse, 25 – 27 May).

Ortigia, which defeated Canottieri in Naples in the “football match” in the first half of the league (2:1) had a great chance to secure the 5th place this weekend. The Sicilians faced Florentia in Florence. Ortigia ruled the field until the middle of third quarter. The visitors built a solid 7:3 lead by the 20th minute. In the remaining time, Florentia water polo players produced an amazing comeback. They didn’t disappoint supporters in the last home game of the season, despite the fact that the points in this match didn’t mean a lot for them, because they are far from the bottom of the table as well as from the Final Six. After the 3rd quarter, the hosts were 5:7 down. They added three goals in the last period for an 8:7 win.

After the game Canottieri – Catania, the local Naples derby was played in the “Felice Scandone” pool. Posillipo blew away the last-placed team, which hasn’t won a point this season, beating Aquachiara 14:3. Posillipo secured its place in the Serie A 2018/19 because it is 6 points ahead of 10-th placed Lazio, which must compete in the Play-out, along with Bogliasco, Trieste and Torino ’81.

Lazio lost to Catania in the replayed match of the 21st round (12:9) played on Wednesday and  they needed a miracle this weekend to stay in the race for the 9th place. The Rome-based team traveled to Brescia. Lazio fought hard. The visitors trailed 8:9 before the fourth quarter. But, Brescia broke the rival the last eight minutes (15:9).

Pro Recco demolished Trieste (18:5), Savona stormed past Torino ‘81 (14:4). Sport Management, the runner-up in the LEN Euro Cup, didn’t have any trouble with beating Bogliasco (11:7).
