After almost 29 months and 73 wins in a row, Pro Recco suffered the first defeat in Italian championships in water polo. In the derby of the 25th round of Serie A, Brescia beat Recco 7-6 and ended great Recco’s winning streak.

Just two weeks ago Pro Recco beat Quinto (15-1), and became the record holder in Italian sport, with 73 consecutive victories in national championships. The Genoese surpassed the record which was held by women’s volleyball team Teodora Ravenna, that won 72 games in a row in the mid-80’s. Recco’s players had not been defeated in Serie A since 14 December 2014, when Posilippo beat them (8-6).

The derby, in front of 1.000 spectators in Brescia, was a hard-fought battle till the end. At halftime, Brescia led 4-2 and in the first minute of the third period had a chance to jump to a three-goals lead, but Cristian Presciutti’s shot from penalty kick was saved by Recco’s captain and goalkeeper Stefano Tempesti. Till the end of the 3rd period the guests, who played without their top scorer Dusan Mandic (head coach Vladimir Vujasinovic decided to give Mandic a rest), leveled the score at 4-4. So, the fourth quarter was a new start. Brescia, led by Cristian Presciutti, played better in the last period. Cristian Presciutti, the man of the match, scored his fourth goal, 20 seconds before the end, for a 7-5 lead and everything was decided. Aleksandar Ivovic netted for the final score, 3 seconds before the final whistle.

Pro Recco keeps top spot

Despite the defeat, it is almost certain that Pro Recco will keep the top position in the league. The Genoese are two points ahead Brescia. In the last round, they are playing against Cannotieri. It is hard to expect that they will lose the game. So it is almost impossible that Brescia can catch them. Recco needs just one point in the last round because the champions beat Brescia 8-6 in the first half of the season.

The race for the Final Six has been ended earlier. At the final tournament will play Pro Recco, Brescia, Sport Managment, Cannotieri, Posillipo and Savona.

Who will avoid play out?

Almost everything is decided about play-out, in which will compete clubs ranked from 10th to 13th place.

Trieste and Acquachiara avoided play-out. Four clubs are in the battle to keep their places in Serie A already after 26th round: Ortigia, Torino 81, Roma, and Lazio. In the 24th round, only Torino achieved a victory, by beating last-placed Quinto, as a guest (7-6). Quinto led 6-4 before the fourth period. In the last 8 minutes, Torino scored three goals in a row for an important victory. Ortigia was beaten by Savona (12-13), Lazio suffered a loss in a match against Sport Management (4-15), and Roma won a point against Acquachiara (12-12)
