Australian NWPL – Round 4

In Round 4 of the Australian Water Polo League, seven games were played last week. The Sydney University Lions kept their 1st place by winning all four games on the road. The UNSW Wests Magpies remained unbeaten.

After an impressive performance against water polo players of the Melbourne WPA Barbarians, the Sydney University Lions proved too strong for the FYFE Adelaide Jets as well. In the first game on Thursday, Barbarians were defeated with 19-3, and were held to a single goal on Friday, thanks to a strong defensive play by the Lions who recorded a 17-1 win. In Adelaide, after falling behind 3-1 in the first quarter, the Lions easily overcame the deficit and recorded a 14-6 victory over the Jets. Water polo players from Sydney againg proved too strong for the Jets, 14-9. In the next round, the Lions will be hosting the unbeaten UWA Torpedoes who are currently in the 2nd spot, and will play at Balmain against the Tigers on Sunday.

The UNSW Wests Magpies extended their winning streak with a victory over the Cronulla Sharks. The teams were tied at halftime (5-5), but the visiting water polo players went scoreless in the third quarter. The Magpies took a 7-5 advantage into the last eight minutes, and then scored five goals to defeat the Sharks 12-7.

Sharks were also defeated at home (3-4) by the UTS Balmain Tigers. In a low-scoring game, the Tigers swept the home water polo players thanks to the 1-goal advantage in both second and the last quarter.

Elsewhere, the Hunter Hurricanes hosted the Drummoyne Devils. After the cancellation of their Saturday night match due to a storm, Sunday’s encounter was closely contested, but the Devils came out with a 9-5 win.
