We already knew all sides involved in the Rio Olympics women’s tournament were to advance to the knockout stage of competition but on Saturday the match-ups were determined in the prelims last round of play. Australia got off to a somewhat slow start facing home team Brazil but in the end posted a clear 10-3 victory and are up for one of the more attractive quarterfinal match-ups as Hungary will be their opponent for a spot in the semis. The Hungarian women fell to USA 6-11 in the final group stage round, due to a poor 2nd period where the Americans grabbed control and walked away. The Stingers and Magyars open up quarterfinal day at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium on Monday.

Italy claimed the top spot in their group after beating Russia 5-10 on Saturday. Next up for the Fabio Conti coached squad is China who lost to Spain 8-12 in another hard-fought but deserved win for the Spanish side. The remaining two quarters matches will see Brazil taking on favourites USA while Russia and Spain could be up for a tough one in their quest for the medals.
